These are random musings of my life journey, the people, animals, places, and events which have woven, and continue to weave, a tapestry that is me. We all know there is no real destination, only the ongoing experiences which blend together, creating the trail. Each step gives a glimpse of what is to come, without allowing me to see the end result. It is exciting. I have a home base that is mine, that gives me a place to rest. This is it. This is where my heart is, no matter where I journey...................

Christmas Memories

I have to run to the store for a couple things to fix for the potluck tonight, and I don't have time for a full post right now. I'm going to leave you with this little memory teaser.

The Christmas when I was eight my brother and I each got bikes. They were the best possible of the day, and we were thrilled! In that day, "the best" didn't mean the streamlined, lightweight conveyances of today, but heavy duty bikes with all the "fixin's." There was a "seat" platform on the back for passengers, a basket on the front, a bell-horn, a speedometer, tassles hanging from the hand grips, full fenders to protect us from splatters, and the cross bars were filled in with a metal "body," so to speak. They were very heavy, but they were the thing to have! One of the best Christmas gifts ever!

After all the gifts were opened, we took them outside for our first ride. Mom said just around the block and then home for breakfast. We lived in a little town in Colorado called Salida, which sits in a high valley, surrounded by mountain peaks. The valley itself is something over 7000 feet, and we had snow or rain a few days earlier, so at that early hour it was cold, ice was present in some places on the street. My brother is several years older than I, and of course, he wanted to race and beat me home. I took the bait and almost kept up with him, but on the last corner I hit some of that ice. I suppose I was watching Rus rather than the road, and I went ka-boom! I was mad that he "made me" fall down, worried about my new bike being scratched. And, of course, my dignity was bruised!

So on that one day, I had my "best ever Christmas" memory and my "worst Christmas memory" all in one fell swoop!

Now, I'm off to the market. While I'm gone ... what is your best and/or worst Christmas (or Chanukkah) memory?

  1. one of my best memories was getting a bike also. i snuck out about 4 a.m. to look at the tree and the gifts but the bike i wanted was not there. i was very disapointed and went back to bed. in the morning i got up early and went in to the living room and still there was no bike. i then went to our kitchen and there it was. i could not wait to ride it even though there was snow on the ground like there always was in new england. i rode that bike all xmas day except to come in for lunch when my mother called and supper at night time.

  4. I have the problem with my long term memory, so I can't recall many, not even sure about last years actually. But, though I don't remember it specifically, I'm sure the Christmas of 1990 was good because Charlie was born December 24th. :)

  5. Oh boy, my best Christmas memories are all my childhood Christmases in Pennsylvania filled with snow. Honestly no one in particular sticks out where I got a bike, or this doll etc.
I don't have any worse Christmas memory either. Gee i'm boring!

  6. Hey, all, I have not been ignoring you, but Blogger is now advising Yahoo that I have comments, and I've been busy enough that I'm not checking often.

MrHaney - It's good to see you again!

    Daisy - That's sweet!

Cheeky - I never bought one of those for my kids, and I forbade Santa to bring one!! :D

Kathi - The birth of a baby makes any holiday a special one!

  7. My goodness, I think I read this post the day you posted it. And I was saddened that I couldn't think of a single thing, that I thought was so fabulous, that I considered a "best" memory.

But today, it came to me. I think I'd have to say that my best Christmas memories were the first Christmas I shared with my daughters. Briyanna's birthday is the 7th of December. So my first Christmas with her was wonderful. Needless to say, I was still a very new, very nervous, very YOUNG mother. But THAT particular Christmas, in 1984 was pretty awesome. God had given ME the best gift I could ever ask for.

Then, in 2001, He showed Himself faithful again and gave me the gift of yet, another daughter. One that I'd prayed for for 11 L.O.N.G. years :-).

Welp, now that they are both here, I can't think of a Christmas that I'd consider to be my WORST. As long as I have my family with me, they're all pretty darn great!

Merry Christmas to you, my friend. Love ya!

  9. Ouch! I know all too well what you're talking about, though. I've been in Colorado for six years now, almost seven, and I STILL feel like a newbie when it comes to icy roads, of which last for about four months around here.

If you have something to say about it, just stick out your thumb, and I'll slow down so you can hop aboard! But hang on, 'cause I'm movin' on down the road!!! No time to waste!!!
