These are random musings of my life journey, the people, animals, places, and events which have woven, and continue to weave, a tapestry that is me. We all know there is no real destination, only the ongoing experiences which blend together, creating the trail. Each step gives a glimpse of what is to come, without allowing me to see the end result. It is exciting. I have a home base that is mine, that gives me a place to rest. This is it. This is where my heart is, no matter where I journey...................

Dear Santa

Oh, dear, will you ever forgive me for this post? Your eyes will be crossed by the time you finish reading it. That is, IF you finish reading it!

One of the delights of living is such a small community is that the local newspaper, while I complain about it being published just twice a week, does some cool things that you’ll not see in most newspapers. One is that they publish kids' letters to Santa. The children wrote these at school, then they are sent to the newspaper which assures the reader that even letters which arrive after the publishing date will “be forwarded to North Pole via Express Mail.”

There were four pages of these letters, and I read every single one of them. Or I tried to! As you will understand soon, the children received minimal help with the letters, although obviously some teachers gave suggestions because several in a row inquired about the elves or the reindeer, or Mrs. Claus. I love that the letters are not “doctored” to make them grammatically correct. It makes for a very difficult read, as you will see, but they are precious!

I had trouble, too, because I'm not "up" on the current toys that are out. It took me a while to realize that "a kitty in my pocket" didn't mean the kid was gonna stuff a poor kitten in her pocket. Some of the unintelligible words or phrases I encountered were indecipherable for me.
Sorry, but I'm old in this area, for sure!!

I pulled out a few that I thought cuter, funnier, stranger. After typing these as they are written in the paper, I commend the brave souls who transcribed these from the children’s own hands! Do you know how hard it is to purposely mistype things? Good luck to you as you read them, but I think you’ll enjoy them, too. I’ve scattered a few comments along the way.

  1. Okay, first I am standing up applauding you for typing this..your eyes must be crossed and bugging out of your head!!!

Secondly, I've laughed so hard I'm coughing...this was just what I needed today so a big kiss and a thank you.

The names are unusual to say the least (or should I say "Unique"?), the wishes are incredible and my heart broke for the little one who has no money for Christmas (which I'm sure is many childrens situation). One little one asked Santa who he writes "his" list to...good question from a child.

Your comments were hysterical...cutting boards and knives? One kid wanted a machine gun!!! A spider???

Thank you so much for the Christmas cheer!!! My kids' letters to Santa were tame in comparison to this and boring too!! They never asked for hand cuffs or a knife or a cutting board...

  2. Sherry - Your reaction was exactly what I'd hoped for!! I was cracking up as I read most of these! Children are so wonderful in their innocence, aren't they? Yes, the no tree and the make dad better ones were heart wrenching.

You're welcome!!! Continue with a great day!

  3. Those letters are TOO cute!!! And you are quite the trooper to not only type them all...but type them as they were written. Being that I live with a 6 year old, I know what you mean about how they spell things. For the most part, they spell it like they hear it. Scary!! :-)

Ok, the list of names are TOO funny. And here I thought it was only the BLACK community with such "creative" names, LOL!!!

    ReplyDelete
  4. Dawn - Not only is it scary how kids spell things, but I think it is a heads-up about how difficult the English language actually is. We have so many silent letters, multiple letters that are pronounced the same or nearly so, etc. I wish we could simplify and use more phonetic spelling, "thru, tuff, tho, etc. It won't happen in my day!

I'm laughing with you here, because after living in KC for over 30 years and struggling with that rich (but sometimes bewildering) creativity of the black community, yes, Dawn, it has gone mainstream, across all ethnic groups. I don't know if you noticed, but I have a granddaughter named A.l.e.k.s.i.s.! And interestingly, I failed to include one name in the list, Lakeshia, because I found it "commonplace." ?????

    Whew!

  5. I named my daughters regular names and ones that could not be shortened into nick names. I spelled their names the traditional way (and the way they sound). That did not seem to stop people. Some people have tried to shorten their names and i always corrected those people. Now that the girls are adults, they have corrected people. Some people have tried to get creative and spell their names in a cutesie way.

I loved the letters to Santa.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Daisy - How interesting! And when I picked names, I looked for names that could have nicknames that were not obnoxious so the kids could chose either/or! LOL! We each have our way, don't we?

Glad you enjoyed the letters. Me, too!

  7. oh good lord!
yes, applause is in order for all the typing!
    geez!
and my favorite was unique, when she said "i bin gud"
uh huh! i bin gud tu.
    ho ho ho

  8. Cameo - LOL! That's a gud xmpl of my point ... phonetically speld words are so much easier to read! There is no dout what Unique is saying!! :D

    ReplyDelete
  9. I've gotten through 3/4 of it, lol...gotta rest the eyes and I'll be back. Don't know whether that says more for your post or for my age. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  10. Kathi - I realized that post would be a challenge, but I had so much fun reading them and wanted to share them! And BTW ... it can't be your age! After all, what would that be saying about my age??? giggle!!

    ReplyDelete
  11. These have me chuckling and nodding my head. I think the knives/chopping board kids are friends and those around them better keep an eye on them LOL
I can't wait until Maddie writes letters to Santa! I love it!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Patti - There were some letter from 3 and 4 year olds, but I didn't include them. They were cute, but dictated and written by adults, so the lack of spelling and grammar gaffs left them out of the running for giggles. I agree ... kids need to write them themselves.

If you have something to say about it, just stick out your thumb, and I'll slow down so you can hop aboard! But hang on, 'cause I'm movin' on down the road!!! No time to waste!!!
