These are random musings of my life journey, the people, animals, places, and events which have woven, and continue to weave, a tapestry that is me. We all know there is no real destination, only the ongoing experiences which blend together, creating the trail. Each step gives a glimpse of what is to come, without allowing me to see the end result. It is exciting. I have a home base that is mine, that gives me a place to rest. This is it. This is where my heart is, no matter where I journey...................

Dogs and Plants

.

It started with this ......

Dogs going crazy tearing up, chewing up and eating my plants! I checked, and they aren't in danger with the plants I have here. But still..... Dang! [BTW, do you have houseplants that can be dangerous for your pets? If you're not sure, google it and check.]

At first, I scolded, but didn't worry a lot because they were pulling off the "babies" from the spider plant. Ultimately, that doesn't hurt the plant, and actually it will help the root system to grow stronger rather than putting it's growth into the starter plants.

However, I didn't want the plants to be too badly damaged so I moved these two huge pots off the floor, to the top of a tiled table. A few hours later, I put the baby gate in front of it, because The Kids simply stood on their hind legs and pulled off more babies AND began chewing on the big long leaves from the mother plant.

This morning I was sitting on the couch, and I looked over to find one of them eating the plants again.

The gate was in place. Entry to the Forbidden Land was gained via the back and/or arm of the couch. Where I was sitting!!

See how the pot on the left has shorter plants?

Yes, it had been eaten to about 1/4 the height it was yesterday!!

But the thing is, the errant dog was sitting right on top of those poor little plants,in that left-hand pot, and beginning to chomp on the taller big brother pot on the right!

Poor little plant!!

Can you guess which dog was sitting here?

Who, me? Awww, Mom!!!

If you're gonna say things like that, I just won't look at you!

Nope! Not seeing you!!

OK, I moved the table farther from the couch. I hope the plants survive.

  1. Ack! Duke has destroyed plants before. He knocks them down and the pots break and the soil goes everywhere and by the time I get home to find it the plant is woefully dehydrated. We've managed to save a couple when he's clumsily smashed their pots to bits but there have been 2 in particular we weren't able to save. The funny thing is, he doesn't chew them or pull them... he simply is too big and oafish to move about in any manner less than completely clumsy. I like the gate idea. Pretty smart of you, lady!

  6. Bobbie, I think my job is to keep little Lolita busy. It's when the other dogs and I are being quiet that she gets into trouble. She gets bored and .....

  7. I think you were the one that gave me the idea for a baby gate and now I use one to keep Sophie out of the litter box. Yes, baby gates are not just for babies. :)

You sure do have your hands full, but I know you wouldn't have it any other way.

  8. Baby gates were wonderful inventions! They have so many uses, don't they, Caroline?

Oh, yeah, my hands are full, and I whine at times, but no, it can't be any other way at all.

  9. My cat Brett was the plant nibbler... now I don't have any though. I do NOT have a green thumb by any means. I hope the plants make it!

  10. Patti, these guys aren't nibbling. They are devouring!! But I suspect the plants will bounce back.

  13. Ahh with a face like that you can't be mean. You might want to consider a play pen. I know of someone who used a play pen instead of a kennel. Lulu wouldn't stand for that.

  14. IE, I might put the plants in the playpen, but Lola would just climb out!
