These are random musings of my life journey, the people, animals, places, and events which have woven, and continue to weave, a tapestry that is me. We all know there is no real destination, only the ongoing experiences which blend together, creating the trail. Each step gives a glimpse of what is to come, without allowing me to see the end result. It is exciting. I have a home base that is mine, that gives me a place to rest. This is it. This is where my heart is, no matter where I journey...................

A nice snow and a stay-in day

It snowed last night! Yes, it certainly did! I got about six inches here at the house. No pictures. I left my camera in the car, and I'm not gonna traipse out there to get it. Listen, it is noon and I'm sill in my pjs. I mean, c'mon, what did you expect?

When I went to bed last night around 10:30, it was just beginning to snow, very lightly and very small flakes, but it was snowing. I woke to the snow thing morning, lots of it on the ground, and a fog with visibility of about 50 yards. It has snowed a little off and on this morning, but not much. Despite the fact that it is still below freezing and I can't see the sun, it appears to be melting a little.

I was suupposed to drive to Alamogordo today for an oil change, lunch with a cousin, and to photograph several grave markers. I rescheduled it for next week when the weather will be much more pleasant. I'm sure I could have made it, but I just don't see the sense in going out if I don't have to. My cousins says it was just raining down there, but I can't get there without going through the twists and turn of mountains. Not conducive to safe driving, so I didn't!

So why am I photographing grave markers? Well, I've volunteered with an organization called "Find a Grave." I signed up just a couple weeks ago and already have had five requests! As a volunteer, I will photograph the markers in areas near my home for people who live elsewhere. They will use these markers and the information on them to verify dates for genealogical searches. Since I actually kinda enjoy visiting cemeteries and reading the stones, wondering about the people and their stories, this will be fun for me. Also, while I'm there I will document the markers of my late husband and his family in the same cemetery.

I love days like this when I can just curl up under a lap blanket with my pups and watch the snow scene out the window.

  1. Lucky you Lyn. Wait till you read my post later, another odd day! I am so glad that you were able to stay home to enjoy it! I am sorry that we didn't get any photos though. But I don't blame you one bit for wanting to stay cozied up. I should have done that myself today! Love Di ♥

  3. Glad you enjoyed your snow day. We only got about an inch yesterday, which melted today.
That sounds like fun to photograph grave markers. Do you get to correspond with members of the family to learn about the people?

  4. SVB, since I'm new at it, I don't know if there would be much contact or not, but I rather doubt it. Never the less, it is fun to be doing something that is helping others to fill the gaps about their families.

  7. Sounds like a wonderful day. I love when it is snowing and I am able to stay inside and enjoy it. But then again, I also love getting out when it's snowing. :)

What an awesome volunteer job you have. I should look into that because that is something that I am sure I would also love to do.

  8. Caroline, if you are interested, check the website for Find A Grave. There's not much to it, and you can limit the area you'll cover or how far you'll drive. Also, there is no time limit. You don't have go tomorrow, but I would always let the person inquiring about a grave site know if it would be a long time. I think I will enjoy doing it.

  9. You are so positive in your approach to life living on your own, and you fill me with admiration. The photographing graves service sounds like a wonderful idea. When I was in active ministry I used to quite often get requests for information in the church archives and in the old cemetery next door. I shall have a good look at the website. Every Blessing

  10. Freda, the positive attitude is by choice, because truth be known, my life is not without significant challenges. But I figure I can't enjoy life if I don't put my focus on the part that is enjoyable!

As for the photographing .... I'd bet you could be a valuable resource for many genealogists. I know that some of my ancestors came from Scotland, but thus far we don't have information to follow up. And since I will not likely be able to make a trip on my own, someone like yourself who could make the walk to a cemetery would be a godsend in confirming such ties. :)

If you have something to say about it, just stick out your thumb, and I'll slow down so you can hop aboard! But hang on, 'cause I'm movin' on down the road!!! No time to waste!!!
