These are random musings of my life journey, the people, animals, places, and events which have woven, and continue to weave, a tapestry that is me. We all know there is no real destination, only the ongoing experiences which blend together, creating the trail. Each step gives a glimpse of what is to come, without allowing me to see the end result. It is exciting. I have a home base that is mine, that gives me a place to rest. This is it. This is where my heart is, no matter where I journey...................

Poor little Max

My poor Max. He has been limping for several days. I've tried to check the foot, but he was very protective. I was able to check the claws and they were all intact; I gently manipulated the pads, and none were swollen or fevered, yet he pulled away. I figured he had sprained it somehow.

I've been trying to keep him quiet, and he didn't seem to mind. He didn't want to walk on it, so I've carried him part of the time when we went in or out, and in between, he pretty much just laid around and watched nature from the deck or napped in our room.

Today he wouldn't put it down on the ground at all, and when I tried to look, he was more protective than ever. I decided to trim the fur on the foot so I could see what was going on. I carefully snipped away at the fur, and he was quite nervous about it. Finally I saw something on the skin under the fur, but he wouldn't let me part the hair for a better look.

I asked my friend if she could look at it while I held him. She is a nurse, so I thought she might be able to tell what we were looking at. I held him while she tried to check it. She said it looked like a huge pimple, a little white dot in the middle of very pink raised skin, so probably a boil. She said she was going to touch it, so I got a good hold on Max, and the minute she touched it, it broke open and spewed blood all over us both! We still don't know what the thing was, there didn't seem to be anything but red blood in it. Although it had the white spot on the top, we could see no pus in the splatter.

Max all but went limp limp my arms. I think it was because it was an enormous relief to have the pressure gone. Poor boy, he had been really hurting, and I couldn't figure it out. He spent the rest of the evening licking it, cleaning it, and by bedtime, he is back to his normal self.

Whatever that thing was, it was enormous. Remember neither of us got a very good look at it, but our guess is that it was about an inch across and raised as much as1/2 inch! It was on the front side of his front foot (his "wrist"), so when he would put the foot down, the normal flex of the joint would have put a lot of pressure on it. No wonder the boy was hurting!

I looked at it a bit ago, and I can't see anything, but a small wound now, smaller than the size of a match head. I guess I'll never know what was there. I'm just glad it is gone and he is resting now. In fact, he is conked out!

Sheesh! It's just one thing after another!

    1. Moni, I don't know if you follow me on FB closely, but I finally had a meltdown this morning. This all just stinks. But it will pass and I'll forget about much of it. Forgetfulness has its blessings.

Max is doing much better. Thank goodness, he is walking, even running, on the foot normally now. He still won't let me look at it very closely, but he is taking good care, licking it often. I think he will be OK.

      Thanks for the encouragement. :)

  2. Oh Poor Max! But I'm so glad you had the help to look at it. It sounded like a blood blister. Those can be very painful. So, So happy that you found the problem Lyn. Love Di ♥

  3. Di, I think it was too big for a blood blister. It was probably an inch or more in diameter and raised up 1/4 to 1/2 inch. I have checked it, and he is having a little drainage from it that has a bit of pus in it. I'm thinking a vet visit is in order.
