These are random musings of my life journey, the people, animals, places, and events which have woven, and continue to weave, a tapestry that is me. We all know there is no real destination, only the ongoing experiences which blend together, creating the trail. Each step gives a glimpse of what is to come, without allowing me to see the end result. It is exciting. I have a home base that is mine, that gives me a place to rest. This is it. This is where my heart is, no matter where I journey...................

Winter fun. NOT!

Last night was the pits. Jes' sayin'.

It was a normal, quiet evening. I watched a little TV, read and played on the internet. I was rather tired, as the past two days have been full of pain. I've really had a mess with fibromyalgia and arthritis, stayed home from work Thursday and Friday because of that and snow which I didn't have the strength or energy to clear to get out. I'd brought some work home, and I actually got a lot of it done. You know the kind of detail stuff that is easy to put off in the usual work day? Yeah, I really got into that.

Anyway, around 9:30 I decided to go to bed. I started the dishwasher, covered the bird cage, sent the dogs out while I brushed my teeth and washed my face. We all crawled in bed, and I snuggled down to watch a sitcom while I drifted off. But just minutes after 10:00, the power went off. I waited a couple minutes, thinking it would come back on. When it didn't, I got a flashlight, gathered several candles and lit them around the bedroom. Then I got the phone book and called the power company.

The power company was aware of the outage but had no time frame as yet. That made sense, as it had been just 15-20 minutes. They took my number to check back with me. I decided I had better prepare, just in case. Good thing I did.

I covered the bird cage with a couple blankets. I got an extra blanket and a comforter for my bed. I also got my LED book light. Then I crawled in bed to read. I didn't want to sleep, because if it went on for a long time, I might need to take further precautions, even leave for a warm place. The temperature was dropping severely outside, and the inside temp was following right along.

Within a couple hours, I had added a sweatshirt, then another. I was warm under the covers, but sitting up to stay awake I needed the upper body protection. The dogs began to creep closer to me. Being long haired, they didn't want to be under the covers, but they did cuddle up around me. Eventually, they did let me cover them with their heads out.

Around 2:00 I called the power company again. All I got was a recording acknowledging the outage and stating that there was no estimated time for restoration. Oh, goody.

By now the inside temp was down to about 55°. I sleep with a cool temp, around 65°, but it was getting downright uncomfortable and miserable. My body was beginning to ache.

In the next hour, the inside temp dropped below 52°.  Outside was 14°.  Brrr.  I was actually contemplating calling a friend and asking if I could come over, when the power came on. Then then it flickered off. Then it came on and stayed. I got up and began resetting electronic devices ad got back in the warm bed. Then it went off again!! After another few minutes it came on again. About ten minutes later, the phone rang, and it was the power company, asking if my power was, indeed, on. I assured them it was, and she said the repair crew said it was good for the go. It was 3:30-ish.

Of course, by this time I was keyed up, wide awake, absolutely unable to sleep! I read a while longer, with the TV on, just to hear the sound, and finally was able to get to sleep about 4:30, I think.

Guess who is probably napping today?

  1. That's a scary situation to be in. Glad it was restored before you and the critters had to leave for warmer grounds. Happy Nap day!!!

    1. Muffy it is one I certainly never thought about facing. In my previous 3 homes, going back about 40 years, I had a fireplace. I don't have one here!!Something I need to think about, for sure.

And I did have a "Nap Day" and it felt SO good!

  2. I have been without power during a heat wave and a cold snap. I thought the heat wave was worse but at least there are battery powered fans! There are no battery powered heating devices that I have found yet

One thing I did get for times without electricity in the winter: a sleeping bag for winter camping. These are bags that can be used in freezing weather. Wal-Mart has some, I think. a camping supply store will have the bags that keep u warm in sub zero temps.

    1. Mary, I'm not that brave! If it gets cold enough for one of those bags, I'm outta here! Jes' sayin'!!!

  3. We rely so much on power for heat and cooling and for cooking and for warm water, etc. Glad that you did not have power for days. It was certainly worse for you because of you medical issues. 55 seems a reasonsable sleeping temp...but froen water pipes are not good.

    1. It is surprising how dependent we are on "conveniences," and until we lose them for whatever reason. And then .......

  4. Botheration!
I hate it when that happens here. We hear nothing from anybody; we have to keep ringing them for any news. Strange that we feel so ‘powerless’ without electricity. Not so long ago it didn’t exist. How did people manage?

    1. I guess I'm lucky, Friko. They actually do check back, very nice since I do have some health issues. They're good about that, BUT we have too many outages.

As for being without electricity .... I simply can not fathom how I'd live without it. I'm definitely not a pioneer woman!!

  5. Sleepless nights are worse than a hangover, let alone having to freeze your butt off most of the night! Did you ever find out why the power went out Lyn? I guess we're lucky here, in 13 years the power has only gone out once in 2011. It was summertime and extremely hot however Kate and I made the most of it by playing board games by candlelight.
Also shared candles with all of the "Younger" neighbors that apparently weren't prepared for such an event!! I wouldn't want it to happen in the winter though. I hope you are feeling better by now.
    Love Di ♥

    1. I guess I've been spoiled by living in cities for so long. A terrible ice storm took our power for 6 days one time and 3-4 another, but in 30 years, that's not bad. And we had 2 fireplaces there, so it wasn't unbearable. In fact, it was somewhat of an adventure! This? NOT!!!!

  6. We spent Thanksgiving in Alaska, in my sister's motorhome. Ran out of propane during the night. When we woke up it was 34 degrees everywhere but under the covers. And it was dark, of course.

Glad your power came on before you had to evacuate.

    1. I remember reading about that on your blog! Yikes!! I guess I wasn't in bad shape in comparison! LOL (at me)!

Yes, 2 evacs in a few months would be devastating, I think. This wouldn't have been a long one, but it's hard to do, nevertheless.

  7. What a bummer. We are so dependent on our power these days. It has been a long time since we experienced a loss of power. I should not note that. I hope that does not bring bad luck. At least the power company was sensitive enough to check on you.

    1. I really appreciated that they checked back, too. I expected a "canned" call back, so it was nice to hear a human voice inquiring if the power was on AND was I alright. Certainly an advantage to living in a smaller community.

If you have something to say about it, just stick out your thumb, and I'll slow down so you can hop aboard! But hang on, 'cause I'm movin' on down the road!!! No time to waste!!!
