The raccoons that came to dinner
Oh, shoot. I'm so disappointed. I can not feed the feral kitties any more. I just found two humongous raccoons eating the food I put out for the kitties. I've been a little suspicious, but today confirmed it all.
First of all I bought a new bag of cat food today at the store. At home, I opened the bag and got ready to pour it into the big Tupperware container I keep it in. Buuuuut .... I couldn't find the container. I looked all over the deck for it, supposing the dogs had tried again to get into it. I finally found it. No way did the dogs do this!
I keep a large plastic trash can on the deck for wild bird seed. I found it with the top off. The bag of sunflower seeds inside was torn open, but strangest of all, the Tupperware was in the trash can! Obviously the dogs didn't carry it 40 feet, put it inside a trash can that is waist high, and remove the top from the Tupperware, as well as the trashcan!! I figured it was a raccoon, especially when I found little teeth marks in the Tupperware where it was pried open.
Shoot. I hope the feral cats find a way to survive, 'cause I just can't have the food out there that will attract the raccoons to the house. Shoot.
Tonight was a potluck, and as usual, the food was fabulous. Allan made a delicious meatloaf, Ricky made a green chili-chicken enchilada casserole that was outstanding. We had fresh broccoli steamed to a perfect al dente, a cabbage-sour cream dish that was excellent, I took Greek potatoes that were yum, and we ended with better-than-everything chocolate cake and a lemon-lime meringue pie, both soooo good! What an incredible dinner! But I don't know why I even say that, because they always are!
Now I have to get back to the task(s) at hand .... getting ready for my trip to Tucson! Woo hooo!!

The trip in review
My trip was good. Way too fast, but good. Driving a bit over four hours, spending the night and driving back the next day was too much. I wasn't exhausted, but darn tired. I'm glad I went, I enjoyed seeing family, and when I go back, I'll plan to stay two or three nights.

I just didn't have time to stay longer this time. The move of my sister and brother-in-law happened quickly, and I wanted to get over to see them as soon as I could. I'm hoping to go back in December if at all possible.
It was good to see that my sis and BIL are settling in nicely. They still have some organization to do, but their little apartment is very nice and will be comfortable for them, I think. They are both doing very well. In fact, my BIL is doing better than we expected. When I left, however, I hugged him and said I would be back soon, and he just began sobbing. He calmed own most of the way before I left, but I felt so bad. He didn't express himself, but we think he was just sad that I was leaving
after it being so long since we last saw each other. Yeah, I do need to get back there soon.
Here is what happens when you try to take a picture of an eight year old. I got a lot of blurs of this kid!

The older kids were blurs in quite a few pictures, too, and rather than trying to sort out the few decent ones, I simply ordered the whole family to sit down! A good picture of everyone, including the two chihuahuas!
The kids will be returning to their mother's home in Montana the first part of next month. It was very nice to see them. Geez, they've grown! Six years makes for a lot of changes with kids. They are really nice kids. I'm glad the custody is finally resolved so they can have these wonderful long visits with their dad, my nephew. His current wife is an amazing woman, perfect for my nephew and wonderful with the kids. I'm SO glad they found each other.
I had to pick up a couple things at Target, so we ran there, and I saw a World Market next door. I wanted to find some small salad plates. I broke one in my set the other day. It really upset me because it can't be replaced. I bought these at Linens & Things. I have place settings for eight, and I intended to buy another four. When LNT was going out of business, I looked online to see if I could get them. Yes, they still had a few. Well, dingy me didn't order them right then and there for some crazy reason, and a couple days later, they were were all gone!!
So now I wanted to buy a few salad plates as those are what I most often eat on. They didn't have to match, but something that would look good along side them would be a plus.
This is what they look like. Very plain, go with everything.
I was hoping to find something in WM to complement them, a cobalt if possible, since my linens are from sky blue to cobalt.
I looked around, and wasn't finding anything that would look good with these, so I was considering some other possibilities, something simply utilitarian.

And then I turned around and saw this.....
I bought four dinner plates and six salad plates, so I now have enough for twelve if necessary and extra salad plates for my daily use.
But the best part? I got to the checkout and found out they were on sale! Half-price! $34 and some change for the whole batch! Hot diggedy damn, woo hoo, and zippedy do dah!!!
I love when things turn out like that. Love it, love it!

A short post
I'll post a little more tomorrow, but I wanted to share this with you. As I was driving home this afternoon, it was not long before sundown. I was kind of grousing about trying to see the road as I was driving into the sun. Then I saw this in the western sky. (You will probably have to click on the photos to enlarge them to actually see the phenomenon.)

There was a rainbow where there was no rain, no waterfall, nothing that I would usually expect when I see a rainbow. There were light wispy clouds in the sky, and the sun hitting them caused what was probably a halo around the sun. It didn't curve in an arc to the ground, the half-circle we typically see; rather, it swept out and around the sun and curved back in toward the bottom.
It was not a complete spectrum of colors, and I couldn't see it the whole way around. But there was a partial arc on each side of the sun, like you see in this photo, and it looked as if you could connect them in a complete circle.
I was able to watch this for about 30 minutes. It took my mind off the glare of the sun off my mind for that period, and was a really pleasant time. I pulled off onto the shoulder one one place to take these photos.
Sometimes, it is really nice to have an unexpected reminder of the great beauty in our world. I haven't said this here on the blog in a long time, but today seems a good time to remind myself and all of you ....

I'm nearly ready for my little trip to Lubbock. I'll be leaving tomorrow morning and returning Friday evening. The trip will be a fast one, but it will give me a chance to hugs my sister and brother-in-law, and to let them know I'm thinking of them and will be able to make the trip more often. I know this move has not been easy for them (second long distance move in 2.5 years), but I hear from my nephew that they are doing pretty well with it. Anyway, it will be good to spend a little time and see for myself that they are well.
I'll be reading through tonight, but I'm not taking the laptop with me. I haven't even asked if my nephew's home has wifi. For such a fast trip, I think I can't do without it. I think I can!!! Besides, I want to take as much time as possible to talk and get reacquainted with my great neices and nephews. So not having the laptop is probably a good thing for this little trip.
Soooo .... I'll be talking with y'all again in about 48 hours. Give or take. I hope you give more than you take. ;)

A young man's fancy ....
I drove into Ruidoso today, and as I was driving down a secondary road, I found these guys in someone's front yard:

A small group of male deer. Nothing spectacular about my photos, unfortunately. I was trying to get pictures of them "sparring." They were lightly locking horns, but without a very serious note to it.
I didn't get pix of that because traffic was backing up on the narrow road. They would lock horns for just a few seconds, then go back to grazing.

The velvet is gone from the antlers. Soon the sparring will be for real, as they begin to collect their harems.

Isn't it interesting that we think of "a young man's fancy turns to love" in the spring, but for much of the natural world, "love" interests .... or lust interests .... come in the fall.
