These are random musings of my life journey, the people, animals, places, and events which have woven, and continue to weave, a tapestry that is me. We all know there is no real destination, only the ongoing experiences which blend together, creating the trail. Each step gives a glimpse of what is to come, without allowing me to see the end result. It is exciting. I have a home base that is mine, that gives me a place to rest. This is it. This is where my heart is, no matter where I journey...................

Finches

You may remember almost a month ago one of my little finches was injured. I wasn't sure what happened, but assumed he injured himself, probably a sprained wing, in a panic while I was cleaning the cage. He was moved into a separate cage with no perches so he would not try to use the wing and give it time to heal. I was told to keep him isolated, actually in another room, so he wouldn't try to climb or fly or get close to the others for at least a couple weeks. After a few days I did put a perch in as low as I could, just about two inches from the floor, because he was trying to climb up the sides of the cage. He liked having a perch to sit on and did OK.

A little over two weeks in isolation was seemingly becoming a bit much for him. He would sit in his cage in the bedroom and call to his buddies in the living room. I decided that he was acting pretty well healed, so I brought the cage to the living room and put it next to the other cage. All of them seemed to really like that. And a few days later, I transferred him into the big cage with the others. For several hours, he sat on the floor of the cage. The others were calling to him, but he acted just like he did before he was isolated, sitting on the floor and bobbing as if he couldn't get to the low perch which I had moved to about three inches off the floor. The others actually began to pick on him, or so it appeared. I think they might have been trying to get him to get off the floor, but they were either nudging or pecking at him. I wasn't sure, and since birds will sometimes hurt or even kill a sick bird, I decided to return him to the nursery cage. While I was doing this, I decided to also move one of the others so he had a companion. I managed to catch the other spice finch and moved him. They stayed this way for another ten days.

Yesterday I moved both the Spice Finches (Nutmeg & Cinnamon) back in with the Society Finches (Gloria, Jackie, and Eleanor) in the large cage. They have all done just fine! It is good to see them all together again. The last 24 hours have been full of singing and very happy chirping. Last night had them all five lined up on a single high perch, snuggled together with beaks tucked into their wings.

It is good to have the cage full and joyful again!

  1. Yaaaaay for everyone being back together. I love finches and Canaries and Parakeets but its probably not a good idea with 7 cats

  2. Yeah, the feathered buddies seem to be very happy to be back together. If you had birds, you'd have to suspend the cage away from furniture, and then hope the humans didn't keep bonking their heads!

  4. I am so glad he is feeling better and happy!
I would so love birds but our cat henry, the younger one of our two, is a naughty boy. He would keep them in a constant state of worry!

  5. Finches are great birds! I would love to get pet birds but I am afraid the cats and the beagle would try to eat the birds!

  7. glad everyone is happily reunited and making beautiful music. we realized in taking out the AC in our bedroom today that the beautiful singing we had been hearing REALLY early in the AM this summer was due to a large nest under the AC!!

  9. You know how these family spats go - one finch was probably talking some smack and it just took awhile for the apology to happen. Glad they are all together again.

  12. I thought I had commented, but guess I didn't.

Glad to hear the little fellow is doing better and back with his buddies. Maybe he faked his injury so he could have his own room, but soon realized how much he missed his buddies.

  13. HAAAA!! I don't think so, because he was in obvious distress from the get-go.

If you have something to say about it, just stick out your thumb, and I'll slow down so you can hop aboard! But hang on, 'cause I'm movin' on down the road!!! No time to waste!!!
